Advanced Poker HUD Stats

This is a more advanced poker hud article.  It describes how some of the more “advanced” hud stats can help you make better decisions in stakes cash games.  I’ve also recommended a sample size for each result in order to give you a sense of accuracy and reliability.

Sample Size Needed for Poker HUD:

Unless you have a big sample of hands on all the players at your table you have to be careful how much you rely on these stats.  I have to say now that if you buy Poker-Edge than you won’t have to worry about this since Poker-Edge has its own stats and database which gives you an accurate read on virtually every player.

You can get a pretty accurate VPIP (Volume Put in the Pot) and PFR (Pre-flop Raise Percentage) after just 50 hands.  This is enough to see roughly what type of player we’re up against and whether he is a fish or a regular.  However, for more complex statistics we need a much higher sample of hands (usually denoted by the last figure on top bar of HUD box). Pre-flop 3-Bet Percentages only become accurate after 500 hands.

Positional 3-bet percentages we need 500 hands minimum.  Our hand reading on opponents becomes skewed and doesn’t reflect any consistency without this.

Post-flop analysis requires more hand data than pre-fop, because if our opponent has a flop percentage of 30% for example, than we will have 70% less data in our sample to analyze post-flop play.  Professionals recommend at least 200 flops to get an accurate AF sample (Aggression Frequency).

Other Useful HUD Stats

3-bet percentage depending on position: Especially in NL100+ 3betting becomes more common among LAG players. This is a useful HUD stat for judging 3betting ranges.

Fold to continuation bet percentage: The flop texture and other variables are still important for cbetting, but I’m much less inclined to do so if my opponent’s fold to cbet % is low.

Continuation bet percentage: This helps decide when to carry on playing the flop.  If I’m playing an opponent with a high cbet % then I’ll be looking to call with a wider range of hands and even bluffing on occasions.

Fold to turn/river bet percentage: I use these stats a lot.  I find some players have a low fold to cbet % but actually fold a lot more to turn and river bets.  Against these opponents double and triple barreling is extremely important.

Aggression frequency based on street: Players with over 50% AF tend to be pretty aggressive.  I can use this statistic for folding/calling or raising an opponent.

Checkraise flop/raise flop percentage: A very important stat before deciding to cbet  flop.  Someone who is check-raising and slow playing a lot I will avoid cbetting against.

4-Bet percentage: Players who are 4-betting a lot are either bluffing or 4-betting wide for value. Players with a small 4-bet % indicates a premium hand AA/KK.
